Master of the Registrum Gregorii, The Miracle at Cana

Circa 980
Illustration in the Codex Egberti, fol. 20v
Cod. 24 in the Stadtbibliothek, Trier

This image is in what the Web Gallery of Art calls the earliest picture cycle in the history of book painting. It pictures the episode in John 2:1-11. At a wedding in Cana, Mary tells Jesus that the wine has run out. He then has the servants pour water into jugs, where it turns into wine. The image shows Mary speaking to Jesus, Jesus pointing to three jugs with the traditional blessing gesture, and on the left the servants pouring the water into the jugs.
